Instagram integration

Integrating Instagram with Frontegg lets your application read an Instagram professional account's profile and media, publish photos and videos, manage comments, and read and reply to direct messages — all through Frontegg's integration layer using Instagram OAuth.

The integration is built on top of the Instagram API with Instagram Login. You configure the integration by creating a Meta for Developers app, adding the Instagram product, and providing the Frontegg redirect URL.

Prerequisites

Create a Meta app

Step 1: Open the Meta for Developers apps page

Sign in to the Meta for Developers apps page with your Facebook account. Click Create App to start the app creation flow.

Step 2: Add app details

Enter an App name (for example, Frontegg Connector) and confirm the App contact email. Meta uses this email for policy notifications, so set it to an address you check regularly. Click Next.

App name restrictions

Meta does not allow app names that contain reserved brand terms like FB, Face, Book, Insta, Gram, or IG. Choose a neutral name (for example, Frontegg Connector) instead.

Step 3: Select the Instagram use case

On the Use cases step, open the Content management category and select Manage messaging & content on Instagram. This provisions the Instagram product and the messaging permissions Frontegg needs. Click Next.

Step 4: Connect a Business Portfolio and create the app

On the Business step, choose the Business Portfolio that owns the Instagram account you want to connect. Click Next through the Requirements step, review the Overview, then click Create app. Meta may ask you to re-enter your Facebook password to confirm.

Step 5: Find the Instagram app ID and Instagram app secret

In the app dashboard, navigate to Use cases → Customize → API setup with Instagram login. The top of the page shows the Instagram app ID and Instagram app secret — these are different from the Meta App ID and App secret in App settings → Basic, and they are the values Frontegg needs.

Copy the Instagram app ID — this is your Frontegg Client ID. Click Show next to Instagram app secret and copy the value — this is your Frontegg Client Secret.

Use the Instagram-specific credentials

Do not use the App ID and App secret from App settings → Basic — those belong to the parent Meta app and will not work with the Instagram OAuth endpoints. Always copy the Instagram app ID and Instagram app secret from the API setup with Instagram login tab.

Configure permissions

Step 6: Add the required Instagram permissions

On the same page, find section 1. Add required messaging permissions and click Add all required permissions. This grants the three baseline scopes immediately for test mode. To capture publishing and insights capabilities, open the Permissions and features tab and add instagram_business_content_publish and instagram_business_manage_insights as well.

The integration uses the following scopes:

ScopeDescription
instagram_business_basicRead an Instagram Business account profile's info and media.
instagram_business_manage_commentsRead and reply to comments on the connected account's media.
instagram_business_manage_messagesRead and reply to Instagram Direct messages on the connected account.
instagram_business_content_publishPublish photo and video posts on behalf of the connected account.
instagram_business_manage_insightsRead insights on the connected account's posts, stories, and reels.

Standard access requires App Review

After being added, each scope shows Ready for testing — they work for accounts assigned to the app via App roles → Roles or Test users. To grant access to any Instagram account, submit your app for App Review and request Standard access for each scope.

Step 7: Set up Instagram business login

Scroll to section 4. Set up Instagram business login and click Set up. In the dialog, enter your Frontegg redirect URL:

Replace YOUR_MCP_GATEWAY_URL with the MCP Gateway URL from the Frontegg portal Settings → Basic configuration page. Click Save.

Verify the OAuth flow

Open the Embed URL generated under section 4. Set up Instagram business login in a new tab. The Instagram login page should load with your app's client ID and redirect URL — this is the screen end users will see when authorizing the integration.

Configure the Frontegg portal

Once you have your Instagram app ID (Client ID) and Instagram app secret (Client Secret), enter them in the Frontegg portal:

  1. Open the Frontegg portal and navigate to [ENVIRONMENT] → Integrations → Instagram.
  2. Enter the Client ID and Client Secret in the corresponding fields.
  3. Select the required scopes.
  4. Click Save.

When a user authorizes the integration, Instagram prompts them to log in and grant the requested permissions to your app.

Keep your credentials secure

Never share or commit your Instagram app secret to version control.
